Two beach scenes from another era — men working a military vehicle through the surf, and below them a group of young women in swimsuits strolling the boardwalk, completely unbothered. I love the tension between those two images, how they sit together and say something about the same beach, the same moment in history, seen from completely different angles. I painted and layered them together and wrote the verse beneath: Though there be fury on the waves, beneath whom there is none. The words feel like the whole piece to me — the ocean holds everything, the fury and the ease, all at once. A layered, poetic, and historically rich collage for a contemporary, coastal, or literary interior.
