I am obsessed with old beach photographs — the way women dressed for the ocean back then, the formality of it, the joy underneath. I found these two images and knew they belonged together. Girls sitting in the surf, a row of women bent in play along the shoreline — there is so much life and humor and freedom in these old photos if you look closely. I painted a wash of turquoise beneath them and wrote the poetry directly onto the surface in my own hand: The whispering waves were half asleep, the clouds were out to play, and on the woods and on the deep, the smile of heaven lays. The words and the images say the same thing to me — women, the ocean, joy. A playful, poetic, and deeply personal collage piece for a coastal, contemporary, or literary-inspired interior.
