Two scenes from the Oregon coast of another century — draft horses working the surf alongside figures in long skirts, and below them a family strolling the wet sand beside an old pier, the woman in a wide brimmed hat the still center of it all. The same beach, the same ocean, completely different worlds. I transferred both images onto raw wood and painted a deep black ground beneath them, scratching marks and letters into the surface like something trying to surface from underneath. The wood grain shows through everything, holding it all together like the land itself. A moody, layered, and historically rich piece for a contemporary, coastal, or boldly collected interior.
