This is my mother and her friends, laughing in a field somewhere in the middle of the last century. A horse grazes behind them, a farmhouse sits quietly in the distance, and they are completely, unselfconsciously happy. I transferred the photograph onto a large painted ground of warm gold, raw umber, and silvery white, letting the paint take over most of the canvas so that they emerge from it the way memories do — partially, beautifully, on their own terms. On the left, ghostly shadows of figures bleed through the layers beneath. I wanted to give this image the space it deserved — all that sky, all that openness around young women who had no idea they were making something worth keeping. A deeply personal and luminous piece that commands a wall in any contemporary, farmhouse, or collected interior.
