These abstract floral paintings grew out of a simple love — fresh cut flowers from the garden, brought inside and arranged on the table. Rather than painting traditional still lifes, Janelle Baglien captures the feeling of flowers: the abundance of color, the way sunlight filters through petals, the joy of a big, generous bouquet. Each painting is built on a thick base of molding paste and layered with color over time — many pieces painted in conversation with her coastal work, with leftover palette colors finding their way into the blooms. This work is perhaps my most romantic piece in this series. Peonies and garden roses were the starting point — those big, lush blooms I look forward to every spring. I wanted the painting to feel the way a fresh bouquet smells: soft and full and a little dreamy. The blue-gray background gives the warm yellows, peaches, and pinks a place to glow, and the hints of periwinkle on the right add just enough cool contrast to keep it from feeling too sweet. The surface is richly textured with molding paste and built up in many layers, giving the blooms a luminous, almost sculptural quality. A lovely piece for a bedroom, dressing room, or any space that calls for softness and elegance.
