The beach at Gearhart is one of the widest on the Oregon coast — on a big tide-out morning you can walk forever and the sky just keeps getting bigger. I am always struck by how small we are out there, a little cluster of people dwarfed by all that air and light and cloud. That is what this painting is really about — not the figures, but the sky above them, enormous and alive with summer clouds. I wanted the viewer to feel that sense of scale, that particular kind of freedom that only happens on a wide open beach. A sweeping, luminous piece that commands a large wall in a coastal home, great room, or contemporary interior.
