Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach is one of those landmarks you never tire of painting — it sits out there in the surf like it has always been there and always will be, completely indifferent to weather or tide. I painted this from the dunes on a breezy, overcast day, the grasses catching the wind in the foreground and the sea stacks emerging through the haze in the distance. The surface is built up in thick, textured layers that give the grass and sky a wonderful sense of movement. A classic piece of the Oregon coast that feels at home in a beach cottage, coastal, or French country interior.
