There are days on the Oregon coast when the sky is so alive it becomes the whole painting. This was one of those days — big summer clouds moving in off the Pacific, brilliant blue breaking through between them, light pouring down onto the sand in great shifting beams. The beach stretches wide and golden, and if you look closely you can just make out a lone figure at the water's edge, tiny against all that sky. The surface is richly textured, built up in layers that catch the light the way the sand does on a bright afternoon.
